S.O.S. Save our Seeds!
Do you know that the EU is preparing legislation that will make it illegal to grow crops that are not on a list of approved seeds?
That list is currently 60% dominated by big corporations like Monsanto, AstraZeneca and Bayer. Anyone wanting to register a seed will have to pay and guess who will be squeezed out. Currently we have three lists; one for professional growers, one to protect endangered species and one for amateur gardeners/growers. Under these proposals, the latter two groups would be removed.
The professional growers list is basically only for hybrid seeds - which means that any seed from that crop will likely be sterile. Thus you become obliged to buy new seeds each year - and guess who sells the seeds? Monsanto, Bayer etc.
Furthermore, it will not only be forbidden to sell other seeds than those already mentioned, but also to grow them. This means that these giant Companies will influence what we eat. Historically important varieties, those specific to a range of climates, heirloom seed companies and our immense spectrum of seeds will be whittled down to just a few, controlled by ....
Huge monocultures will develop, a monopoly on varieties and prices - all controlled by them.
The Avaaz community are organising a petition to present to the European Parliament. Let's create a storm to save our seeds.
We feel strongly about this, do you?

Rare Citrus. We're delighted to have in stock the following rarities: kaffir lime and finger (caviar) lime trees. Check them out in the SHOP section.
The Mediterranean Fruit Fly - or Medfly - (ceratitis capitata) - is considered to be the most important agricultural pest in the world. It is a major pest of citrus and also deciduous fruits, such as peach, pear, plum, apple., apricot etc. The larvae feed upon the pulp of our fruits, eventually reducing the whole to a juicy, inedible mass. We've all suffered with it.
Now we've got the answer - Cera Traps. A totally ecological system, they work by attracting the female flies into the pot where they drown.
A pot will last for 3 months and protect an area of approx. 150m2. The traps are refillable and easy to set up. No more spraying against the fruit fly! Now in stock. Price: €8.50

Open Day, 7th October 2015
We´re Going to Look a Picture!
As many of you know, this year at the Garden Centre we are celebrating our
15th birthday and my book, Mediterranean Garden Plants, has its 10th birthday –
a double celebration! Because it´s such a special year, we´d like to share it with
you all too, so four Open Days have been scheduled throughout the year when
there will be lots of special offers and discounts. Our next Open Day is coming up
soon, on 7th October, and we think it´s going to be rather special.
Following on from the success of our Bee Day and Wild Flower/Cheese-making Day,
we have a visiting group of artists from the Alhaurin El Grande area on the
Costa del Sol. The group is called ‘The Finca Vida Painters’ – after the name of
the finca where it all started 6 years ago! They are an international group of
retired ‘youngsters’ who come to their artwork with enthusiasm and open minds!
They work in mixed media which includes pencil, charcoal, chalk and oil pastels,
oil bars, acrylics, inks and collage to say nothing of the odd dollop of sand or
cement! Brushes, spatulas and credit cards are some of their customary tools.
For the exhibition at the Open Day at Viveros Florena, the theme will be flowers and plant life and there will be artwork for sale nestled between plants and under the trees throughout the Garden Centre. We´re going to look a picture! Some of the artists will have their sketch books on display and will pitch their easels in the dappled sunlight so that you can watch them at work, pick up a few tips, maybe, and share knowledge.
To increase the enjoyment, any plant in the Garden Centre that has a flower on it will be at 20% discount – how crazy is that – so come and fill your garden and pots with colour and, perhaps, add a very personal and ‘fond memories’ picture to your collection.
We´ve also added into the Garden Centre some unusual chickens. My daughters said they couldn´t buy me a plant or flowers for my birthday so they bought me chickens instead! Did I say we´re all mad here?! Bring the kids and grand-kids to see them.
This is an informal fun day with free tea, coffee and refreshments and Maddie´s very special home-made cakes. And, of course, the Viveros Florena Team will all be there to answer your gardening queries and questions.
I know that many of our readers will not be able to attend simply because of the distance involved but we want to involve you all. So any on-line order received during the week of 5th October to 12th October will be subject to 20% discount – flowering or not! And, don´t forget, my Mediterranean Garden Plants book is at a special offer price of €20 for the entire year, 2015.
From 29th September we have changed to Winter Hours, 10 until 4 and the Open Day will start at 11 o´clock.
Protect your Pines
We now have in stock Ynject to protect your pines against the processionary caterpillar.
Our Final Open Day for this year is on 9th December 2015
and on the run-up to Christmas we have a very seasonal offering – a talk with free sampling of Spanish wines to start the festive month with style.
Our qualified sommelier for the day is Lara Silaghi and she is as bursting with personality and character as the wines she´ll be telling us about. This is a mustn’t-miss occasion and is sure to be popular so we are having two sessions; the first starts at 11am and the second at 2pm.
Mark it in your diary - only one week to wait!
There will be special offers on the day at the Garden Centre too
and a dazzling array of poinsettias, Christmas trees etc.
Our sommelier Lara Silaghi in full flow!
A huge thank you to Lara for her super informative chat about Spanish wines on 9 December.
Her presentation was just magical.
For those of you who missed it, she will be back!
Cool Winter evenings are good for sitting by the fire, glass of wine and reflecting on the year just gone. As a Team we´ve had lots of high points in 2015; our highly successful Open Days, which we shall repeat, gardens lovingly planned and executed, meeting lots of great people through the Garden Centre, sharing coffee, cake, knowledge and always a laugh! And, of course, striving always to be better. We hope you can see the changes and improvements we are making and we´d welcome your input, ideas and suggestions. These are some of our more unusual crops we have harvested through the year. Home grown organic tobacco, red penis peppers and luffas! If you missed out on them, we shall have plants available again in the Springtime. We hope the year was as kind to you as it has been to us! And, hopefully, this one will be even better.
